Reviewing my 2023 goals!

As mentioned in my 2023 goals blog, I will review my 6 month goals after 3 months, so here goes the review!

1. Pass 2 Actuarial Exams

I’ve passed one exam! So I’m halfway there at the halfway stage, but for the exam I’ve just sat in April I’m not confident in passing. However there is no point thinking about the outcome now, I’ll have to revisit these goals in July once I’ve obtained my results.

2. Write two more investment reports

For those not aware I have a new website called Sanjay Patel Actuaryย  Here I am writing investment reports based on my method of investing. I’m currently in the process of publishing my first report for Q1 2023 so I think I should be able to successfully complete this goal.

3. Create weekly blogs and short videos for TikTok and Instagram

Okay here I have failed miserably, I’m not really sure what the issue is, I have ideas that pop into my head but they are not translated into actual content. I have allocated time in my timetable, but my timetable seems to be too full and so because this goal is the lowest priority it does not get done. I will experiment with allocating a whole afternoon or evening to make several weeks of content. And then maybe I can just upload weekly or set an upload schedule in advance.

4. Mentor 2 students from Imperial College London

I’ve been mentoring two students from my university and it is going relatively well. There are some challenges but also I’m seeing some progress already after just two meetings so I’m really happy about that. It is more progress for the mentee than progress for myself. But I am finding it interesting.

5. Mentor / Coach at work

I’ve not been mentoring or coaching at work, although it is something I do informally in my day to day job. My managers are very supportive, so I will explore how to formalise this over the next couple of months.

6. Read or listen to 6 self help books

I’ve continued to listen to various podcasts including Diary of a CEO. However in terms of reading or listening to self help books it has been a challenge. The best time for me to listen is actually commuting to work. This is how I completed Miracle morning by Hal Elrod. However that is the only book I’ve completed so far this year. I am currently reading Think and Grow Rich by Napolean Hill and listening to The 4 hour work week by Timothy Ferris. If I complete those two in the next 3 months I will be reasonably satisfied.

7. Reach 66kg in weight

This goal is going surprisingly well and I will explain why. After I made the goal I ended up getting quite ill with a salivary gland infection which was making it really painful to eat. In fact I ate the bare minimum over two weeks which led me to lose almost 3kg! Since then I have been very disciplined with attending the gym regularly (at least 3 times a week) and eating a good diet (breakfast, lunch and dinner). My weight has recovered from 57.5kg to 60kg and has since increased to 63kg. I keep a track of my weight regularly, so I thought it would be a good idea to share the graph below which has been annotated. I hope you find it as intruiging as I did. I do feel like I’m getting fatter rather than putting on muscle but more likely it is a bit of both.

8. Kabaddi training open to all in London

For those that don’t know I’m the president of England Kabaddi Union. And this is one of my goals. There have been some successes and setbacks regarding this goal. We have a training venue but not a full pitch. At the moment training is open to those that already know how to play Kabaddi the plan is to expand to facilitate Women’s Kabaddi training and training for all levels. I hope this will be possible in the coming months.

9. Create a Kabaddi rules video

I’ve not made any progress on this goal yet. It is more like a nice thing to have and will be done when I allocate some free time.

10. Take a break

I haven’t really had a sustained break from work and other bits and pieces. I am planning to take a significant period off over the summer so that can be my break.

Goals not mentioned

So there have been many unforseen opportunities and circumstances that have arisen over the past 3 months. One of which included attending the Bangabandhu Cup in Bangladesh for the second year in a row. This time more on the management side rather than coaching, but it was a great experience nonetheless with the England team winning 2 out of 5 matches. I’ve also taken up an opportunity that I can’t disclose at this time, but sometimes opportunities come and go and it is upto you to take them. And finally I did some punting in Cambridge which is fairly successful as I did not fall in the water!
